For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in the way that people think, talk and artistically represent the divine. Through art and music, I am always seeking to engage the question of how humans relate to God.
When I was young, I was drawing constantly with my uncle, who is an illustrator. I have been heavily influenced by his visual approach.
Over the years, I have worked in ministry settings doing collaborative projects in art and music that help people simultaneously be together in community and also represent their theology visually and audibly. Some of the unique medias I have worked with include rocks, post-it notes, lazy susans, and tupperware.
Recently, my work on VHS tapes is solely focused on engaging the question of humankind as media for the divine. To see a full statement of this project, click here.
The word SACREDSLATEJAM is an anagram for the letters in my full name Carl James Dates. To me, this embodies the philosophy of my approach to creativity - It always takes scrambling and re-membering, it's always sacred, it's always a clean slate, and you know when it jams.
